Achievements

Notable career achievements (most recent first):

  • Conducted many mediations and arbitrations involving a wide variety of subject
    matters, including international business, long term disability, motor vehicle,
    professional negligence, land use, environmental, historical sexual abuse,
    construction, natural resources, IT and high-tech, contract, intellectual property
    and employment issues.
  • Demonstrated commercial mediation to first year law students at the University
    of Ottawa Law School and served as mediator and judge of the 2010 competition
    for the Richard Weiler Prize in ADR.
  • First Canadian Mediator certified by the International Mediation Institute.
  • Appointed by Canada to NAFTA 2022 Committee.
  • University of Ottawa Law School establishes Richard Weiler Prize in ADR.
  • Appointed to the roster of conciliators and arbitrators maintained by the Ontario
    Farm Products Marketing Commission.
  • Served as a judge for the 2nd International Mediation Competition held at the
    International Chamber of Commerce in Paris in February 2007.
  • Spoken on the subject of Mediation-Arbitration of Employment Law disputes at
    the Law Society's Annual Employment Law Summit .  
  • Delivered presentation at the Canadian Bar Association Annual Newfoundland.
    on the "Many Ways of Mediation.
  • Participated as a speaker on a panel exploring the use of ADR in the context of
    government ethics laws at the annual conference of the Council on Government
    Ethics Laws, Boston Mass.
  • Been appointed Chair of the National ADR Section of the Canadian Bar
    Association (2005-06), having served 3 years on the national executive.  
  • Delivered a presentation on the mediation of Intellectual Property disputes for the
    Canadian Bar Association in Ottawa
  • Been added to the data base of commercial mediators maintained by the
    International Chamber of Commerce in Paris
  • Participated as a panelist on the topic of “Building a Successful International
    Mediation Practice” at the International ADR Conference of the American Bar
    Association in Washington DC
  • Participated on a team exploring the feasibility of establishing commercial ADR
    in Guyana (study funded by the Inter-American Development Bank)
  • Continued work on a Project for the Albanian Ministry of Justice (funded by the
    World Bank) to establish a Commercial ADR Centre in Tirana, Albania
  • Been appointed as a roster mediator and arbitrator for the Centre for Arbitration
    and Dispute Resolution (CADER) in Kampala, Uganda
  • Joined the faculty of the International Law Institute - Uganda (Kampala) - a centre
    of excellence for legal information and training in sub-Saharan Africa. He has
    delivered a number of ADR training and information sessions for the Legal,
    Judicial and Business community in Kampala
  • Delivered a speech on ADR for Intellectual Property Professionals at Conference
    of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada
  • Delivered a presentation on Mediation in Russia at the 2002 Annual Meeting of
    the American Bar Association Dispute Resolution Section in Seattle Wash
  • Led a panel discussion for the Ontario Bar Association on Mediating the Multi-
    Party, Multi-Day Case
  • Joined the faculty of the University of Ottawa Law School as an adjunct professor
    of ADR
  • Conducted Mediation Training for election officials from Bosnia-Herzegovina for
    the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution
  • Led a panel discussion on Effective Advocacy in Mandatory Mediation for the
    Advocates' Society
  • Delivered a presentation on the use of ADR for International Commercial
    Disputes for a committee of the US Department of Commerce
  • Been appointed to the Regional Chartered Mediator Accreditation Committee of
    the ADR Institute of Ontario
